A resection “reproving” Israel for “continued archaeological excavations in Jerusalem” was adopted 58-3 at the 17th session of the UNESCO General Assembly here. The United States was among the 20 nations that abstained in the voting which took place last Friday. The resolution contained “an urgent appeal” to Israel to “abstain from any modification which might alter the character of the city.” The Assembly also approved a resolution inviting the organization’s director to “insure UNESCO’s presence” in Jerusalem in order that the resolution be respected. Israel’s delegate said that none of UNESCO’s representatives in Jerusalem had ever proven Israel’s unwillingness to keep the city intact.
