A Russian-language translator from Ukraine now living in Chicago was charged with making false statements to the U.S. government to help 23 people seeking political asylum in the Untied States. Federal officials said that in exchange for cash, Victor Voinenko, 34, helped immigrants pose as persecuted Jews so they could gain asylum. He is accused of accepting almost $13,000 from the 23 asylum seekers in a scheme that ran from 1993 to 1997.
