A testimonial to Abe J. Greene tonight in the Central High School auditorium in recognition of the honor bestowed upon him as Paterson’s outstanding citizen for 1933 became an honor not only for Mr. Greene but for State Jewry.
Recent anti-Semitic outbursts here caused the chairmen of the Abe J. Greene testimonial to turn the affair into a demonstration of State Jewry.
Men who have been honored as outstanding citizens attended. They were Dr. Andrew F. McBride, four times mayor of Paterson and former State Commissioner of Labor; James Wilson, president of the Chamber of Commerce; and Harry B. Haines, publisher of the Paterson Evening News.
Judge William L. Dill spoke for the State. Mayor John V. Hinchliffe spoke for the people of Paterson. Other speakers included the Rev. William J. Carlin, George H. Hunziker, the Rev. Howard A. Adair, and Rabbi Reuben Kaufman, of the Temple Emanuel.
Representatives of every Jewish organization in Paterson attended. Numerous Christian organizations sent delegates.
Mr. Greene was awarded the honor for his work last year in ending a fourteen-weeks’ strike in the silk and dyeing industry.
