A Torah recovered from the Holocaust was dedicated aboard the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier. The scroll, measuring an impressive 26 inches in height, once served a congregation in Lithuania. It was presented Sunday to the USS Truman by the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater at a ceremony in Norfolk, Va. The Torah will reside in the Hoffberger Ark, dedicated to World War II naval officer and philanthropist Leroy Hoffberger. Originally the ark was used in the All Faiths Chapel at the U.S. Naval Academy, but it was given to the Truman in May following construction of the Naval Academy Jewish Center. Both the ark and the Torah will remain aboard the ship for the remainder of its commission, 41 years.
