A living memorial to the unity of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel was established yesterday by the planting of a tree in Lafayette Park, opposite the White House. The ceremonies, marking the 13th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem in 1967, were conducted by the Zionist Organization of America.
The project was sponsored by the American Zionist Federation and its constituent organizations in cooperation with the Jewish Community Council of Greater Washington. The tree was unveiled by Rabbi Joseph Sternstein, president of the AZF, and Ann Block, president of the Washington Zionist Federation. Songs and poetry of Jerusalem accompanied the planting which was authorized by the National Parks Service.
