A United Nations official described a “potentially dangerous deterioration” of Israel-Palestinian relations. Alvaro de Soto, the U.N. Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, briefed the Security Council on Monday. He attributed the deterioration to the refusal of Hamas, the terrorist group elected in January to lead the Palestinian Authority, to recognize international principles of “non-violence, recognition of Israel’s right to exist and the acceptance of previous commitments and obligations,” a U.S. statement said. De Soto also pointed to the withdrawal of support by several key donors for the Palestinian Authority, and growing lawlessness in Palestinian territories, the statement said.
