A verdict is expected Thursday in what is believed to be one of Germany’s last war crimes trials. Alfons Goetzfried, 79, is charged with helping murder 17,000 people, most of them Jews, on Nov. 3, 1943, at the Majdanek concentration camp in Poland. He reportedly has admitted to shooting 500 people himself in that action, called by the Nazis the “Harvest Festival.”
