Preliminaries in the basketball debating and oratory contests of the Aleph Zedek Aleph, junior B’nai B’rith, are taking place today.

More than a dozen teams, representing chapters from all over northeastern United States and castern Canada, will play in the basketball tryouts, which will be held in the gymnasium of the Hebrew Orphan Asynasium, Amsterdam avenue and 138th street, and the the Jewish Theological Seminary, Broadway and 122nd street.

The debating and oratory preliminaries will take place in the main building of. City college at 10 a. m. The subject of the debate is “Resolved, that the establishment of a Jewish Hmeland is essential to the preservation of Jewish life in the diaspora.” the three subjects for the oratory contest are: “What It Means To Be a Jew,” “Israel as a Minority Among the Nations,” and “The Chalutzim.” The finals in all three contests will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock at Townsend hall in City College.

This evening there will be a reception and dance in the grand ballroom of the Hotel Astor, Broadway and 44th street.

The tournament will concluce with a luncheon tomorrow at the Hotel Greytone, Broadway and 91st street. Gorge Z. Medalie, Maurice B. Davidson, Commissioner of Water Supply, Gas and Electrictty; Rabbi Milton Steinberg, of the Park Avenue Synagogue, and Moritz Rothenberger will be the principal speakers. Milton Kretter will be toastmaster. Other speakers will incuded Sidney Miller, Aaron Tolin, Joel Sammet, Philip Cowen, Theodore Badman and William E. Ratner.

A pre-zournament dance was held last night at the B’nai B’rith Clubhouse, 36 West 69th Street.

More than 200 delegates are expected to attend the tournament.
