Aaa Takes Neutral Stand on Poultry

The Agricultural Adjustment Administration today announced that it would maintain a neutral position toward the dispute on rabbinical supervision over the kosher slaughter of poultry now raging between the live poultry industry in New York and the Kashruth Association.

However, in the event that the representatives of the industry and the Kashruth Association cannot amicably adjust their differences and both request the AAA to assist in an attempt to obtain an adjustment, the Administration gave assurance that its services will be available for such purpose.

The New York live poultry industry is operating under a code of fair competition which is under joint authority of the Agricultural Adjustment and the National Recovery Act. Administration of the code, insofar as the fair trade practice provisions are concerned, is under the AAA.

When the dispute between the industry and the Kashruth Association developed several months ago, it was suggested that a provision be written into the code covering rabbinical supervision by the Kashruth Association. Funds to cover the cost of this supervision, it was suggested, could be raised through the code provision which would also make possible an assessment on members of the industry.

In a report on a study of the possibility of including such a provision which was recently made by the Administration to Mayor LaGuardia, it was emphasized that “as a matter of administrative policy it would be distinctly unwise to have such a provision inserted in the code and further that as a legal matter such provision would undoubtedly be held to be invalid.”
