Abel Shaban, world chairman of the OSE, arrived here today from Paris following conferences there with Dr. Giora Josephthal, Jewish Agency treasurer, and Moses A. Leavitt, executive vice-chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee, concerning OSE activities in North Africa and Israel.
Mr. Shaban, who is a prominent leader of South African Jewry, will remain in this country for about a week during which he will confer with leaders of various Jewish organizations in the United States. He will then proceed to Mexico City where a five-day Pan-American OSE conference will open on May 31.
The purposes of the conference, Mr. Shaban said, are to obtain first-hand information on the existing health conditions of the Jewish populations, their needs and requirements in the fields of health, child-care and medical education in the various Latin American countries, and also to formulate a program of OSE health activities in these countries in cooperation with the local Jewish communities. It is the first conference of its kind in Latin America and prominent physicians from various Latin American countries will attend it, Mr. Shaban stated.
