An appeal against “the passions, the prejudices, the false theories and ideals which are making Europe an armed camp,” was voiced here last night by Governor Herbert H. Lehman in an address before the New York State division of the United Spanish War Veterans.
Praising the contributions made to American life by those who fled European persecutions, Governor Lehman declared that democratic America would not tolerate “such hatreds and divisions” as divided “nation from nation, race from race, creed from creed, class from class” in the countries they had left behind.
“We must not for an instant tolerate here the passions, the prejudices, the false theories and ideals which are making Europe an armed camp and which have forced from their homes countless thousands to wander homeless through Europe,” he continued.
