Abraham D. Beame, who ran for Mayor on the Democratic ticket, and who would have become New York’s first Jewish mayor if elected, was defeated in yesterday’s elections in which John V. Lindsay, Republican-Liberal candidate, received a total of 1,166,915 votes as against the 1,030,771 votes cast for Mr. Beame.
Mr. Lindsay, who will be the first Republican mayor in New York in 24 years, was supported by the Jewish Daily Forward, while Mr. Beame was supported by the Jewish Day-Morning Journal, The Liberal Party, in which David Dubinsky and Alex Rose, two prominent Jewish labor leaders, play a dominant role, backed Mr. Lindsay. Traditionally, the Liberal Party and the Jewish Daily Forward back the candidates of the Democratic Party.
During the election campaign, both Mr. Lindsay and Mr. Beame disavowed religious and ethnic endorsement. Mr. Beame, who is City Controller, especially disavowed a mailing sent out by a New York Orthdox Jewish personality, printed in English and Yiddish, urging Jewish voters to back him on the basis that he was “a good Jew.”
