Rep. Bella S. Abzug (D.NY) said today that she has received inquiries from women who want to volunteer to serve as technicians at the early warning posts in the Sinai. The Congresswoman, who also announced her support of the Israeli-Egyptian Sinai interim accord, stated: “It might be a good idea to include women technicians in the group because their presence would underscore the peaceful goals of this mission.”
She said among those seeking to volunteer was a young New York woman with an engineering degree who speaks Hebrew and Arabic and is a student of Middle Eastern affairs. In a letter to Rep, Abzug, the applicant said:
“I have friends in both Israel and Egypt and I hope that by taking an assignment in the Sinai I could help all of them to lead a more peaceful life. I have been in the Negev and I know how bleak and desolate the land can be but I will volunteer for one to two years’ service.”
Congresswoman Abzug said she was referring inquiries about the volunteer force to the State Department. In her general comments on the Israeli-Egyptian pact, she said she welcomes and supports the interim agreement “as a significant step toward achieving a stable peace in the Middle East.” She added: “I believe the concessions made by Israel demonstrate that nation’s deep sense of responsibility and commitment to peace.”
