Hundreds of students of the educational systems of the Reform and Conservative movements in the U.S. will arrive in Israel beginning next year for various periods of study, Dr. Eliezer Tavin, head of the World Zionist Organization’s Diaspora Education and Culture Department reported. Tavin returned from a three-week visit to the U.S. where he signed an agreement between the WZO and the non-Orthodox movements.
Both movements operate some 3000 educational institutions throughout the U.S. Ties with them have been very weak, so far. The agreement calls for visits of teachers from those institutions who will take special courses on Judaism, Zionism and Israel. In addition the department will offer local courses in the U.S.
The department recently instituted a special section to deal with Jewish kindergartens overseas. During his visit, Tavin met with Bernice Tannenbaum, president of Hadassah, and with the executives of the Jewish communal centers to discuss the possibility of establishing a wider network of Jewish kindergartens in the U.S.
