A Security Council meeting to have been held today to act on a draft resolution extending the mandate of the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) in the Middle East has been postponed until tomorrow, one day before the mandate is to expire. UN sources said the postponement was due to the Council’s continued occupation with the Issue of South Africa’s expulsion. Council members were reportedly still working on the UNEF draft document today.
A spokesman for the U.S. Mission said today that he could not provide information elaborating on the assertion by Sen. Stuart Symington (D. Mo.) before the First Committee (Political Committee) yesterday that nuclear weapons have been placed in Europe, the Middle East and Far East. The Egyptian Ambassador to the UN. Abdel Meguid, denied today that there were nuclear weapons in his country.
