The general Council of the Zionist movement, commonly known as the Actions Committee, opened its sessions here yesterday in the presence of forty-nine members of the Council. Among those present were Louis Lipsky, president of the Zionist Organization of American, Miss Henrietta Szold and Norvin L. Lindheim. Dr. Weizmann was unable to be present at the opening session.
Dr. Leo Motzkin, chairman of the Council, who presided, expressed regret that the meeting was not taking place in Palestine, as was originally planned. He expressed the hope that the economic crisis in Palestine will be dealt with successfully by the Zionist Organization in cooperation with the non-Zionists and the Congress.
The members of the General Council rose to honor the memory of Achad Ha’am and Herman Conheim.
Nahum Sokolow, chairman of the Zionist Executive, submitted a report on the political situation. He asserted that political conditions for the Zionist movement have generally improved, particularly in England and France. The only difficulties which engage the attention of the Zionist leaders are in Palestine, where they are of a purely economic nature. The situation in Palestine is serious, but not critical, he stated.
Col. Frederick H. Kisch, political representative of the Zionist Executive in Jerusalem, in his report on the situation in Palestine declared that the Palestine crisis has already passed the peak and “we may confidently look to the future.”
Dr. Arthur Hantke reported on the activities of the Keren Hayesod and M. M. Ussishkin on the activities of the Jewish National Fund.
