The Jewish Big Sisters Association, affiliated with the Jewish Board of Guardians of which former U. S. Attorney George Z. Medalie is the president, will meet Tuesday afternoon, December 19, at the Federation Building, 71 West 47th Street. Elizabeth H. Dexter, case work director, will speak on “Initial Approaches to Case Work”.
The purpose of the organization is to aid children whose home environment is considered detrimental.
Mrs. Sidney C. Borg announced the meeting, which was planned by Mrs. Leonard Wallstein, chairman of the program committee of the Big Sisters, under the auspices of Mrs. Benjamin Buttenweiser, Mrs. Cecil Borg, Mrs. Samuel C. Coleman, Mrs. Arthur Schulte, and Mrs. Irwin Untermyer.
NATIONAL COUNCIL
At the ninth national conference on “The Cause and Cure of War”, to be held in Washington, January 16 to 19, Mrs. Arthur Brin, president; Mrs. Oscar S. Marx, a member of the National Board and for many years a Director of Peace for the National Organization, and Mrs. Mary G. Schonberg, executive secretary, will actively participate in the program.
At a meeting of the National Field Service Committee of the National Council of Jewish Women, held at National Headquarters last week, enthusiastic reports were received of the growth of sections in many parts of the country, with particular reference to their participation in problems related to the German situation, their increased activity in civic and communal affairs, their activity in legislative measures of state and national importance, and their increased memberships. Many of these reports were given by the executive secretary, Mrs. Mary G. Schonberg, who had just returned from a trip in the Southern states extending as far west as Louisiana, and by the field counsellor, Miss Cecelia Razovsky.
IVRIAH NEWS
Throughout all the Ivriah Districts in Greater New York, Chanukah parties for the children and adults are being given.
On Monday afternoon, the West Bronx Division is having a Chanukah card party. In the evening the Bushwick section is conducting a gathering at the Stockton Street Day Nursery.
On Tuesday afternoon, the West Side Division of Ivriah will meet at Rutgers Club, 314 West 91st Street. The officers of the Diviison will participate and a large part of the program will be devoted to Chanukah.
On Tuesday evening, Rabbi Harry Halpern of the East Midwood Jewish Center will be the guest speaker at the North Queens Division of Ivriah. The meeting will be held at the Astoria Center of Israel. A musical program has been arranged, and Mrs. Gabriel Hamburger, chairman of Ivriah, will distribute the prizes among the children.
On Wednesday, the Bensonhurt, East New York and Eastern Parkway Divisions of Ivriah will celebrate Chanukah.
WOMEN’S LEAGUE
Announcement was made by Mrs. Israel Davidson, president of the New York Branch of the Women’s League of the United Synagogue that reservations are coming in rapidly for the tea-musicale to be held at the Hotel Commodore on Wednesday. Many prominent women leaders have been invited.
Mrs. Henry S. Hendricks, honorary chairman, and Mrs. Martin Wechsler and Mrs. Boaz Cohen, cochairmen, have planned the program. The principal address will be given by Mrs. Frederick Nathan who will speak on “Four Centuries of Jewish Tradition in America.”
FEDERATION JUNIOR COMMITTEE
A junior committee, headed by Miss Marjorie Untermeyer and Miss Susan Lehman, treasurer, is arranging a tea-dance on December 25 at the Central Park Casino for the benefit of the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies. The affair will be attended largely by students home for the holidays.
