A demand for further legislative measures to improve the position of the Jews in Rumania was demanded today in the Parliament by Anghel Dascalu of the Hashomer Hatzair, speaking for the Jewish Democratic Committee.
Participating in the debate which followed the speech from the throne, Dascalu, who is one of the two members representing Jews as such, welcomed the government’s abolition of racial legislation and the establishment of equal rights for all persons, but said that the following additional measures were necessary:
A new citizenship law abrogating all disabilities imposed upon Jews by pre-war legislation. A pension grant to widows and orphans of persons who died as a result of pogroms or deportations. Surrender of property of heirless Jews to the Jewish community. Tightening up of existing laws covering restitution of property. Grants-in-aid to Jewish schools on the same basis as that given institutions of other ethnical groups.
Dascalu also discussed the Palestine issue, expressing confidence that the Rumanian Government and people will support the building of a Jewish national home in that country.
