A scheduled address before the German Association Club by a West German army officer and former member of the Nazi Wehrmacht, currently stationed with a NATO contingent at Camp Shilo near here, has been canceled after the Canadian Jewish Congress and other Jewish groups protested the appearance.
In a statement issued here, the Canadian Jewish Congress said that the planned appearance by the officer, Lt. Col. Wilhelm Mundt, would be an “affront to the survivors of Nazism in our midst and to many other people.”
A similar protest was voiced by the United Jewish People’s Order’s Winnipeg Branch which declared in a letter to National Defense Minister Paul Hellyer that Mundt’s appearance would be “an abuse of the democratic way of life for which thousands of Canadians gave their lives in World War II against Nazi Germany and contempt for many families of the victims.”
