Three Washington area country clubs were sharply criticized for discrimination by the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith yesterday. The clubs had dropped out of an inter-club women’s tennis league after a Negro woman Joined another club in the league.
Taken to task in a statement issued by Jason R. Silverman, director of the ADL’s D.C.Maryland regional office, were the Chevy Chase, Columbia and Washington golf and country clubs. “Social discrimination, the most polite form of…(discrimination), has long been regarded by the ADL as the most insidious and dangerous,” Mr. Silverman said. He noted that “a number of well-known public officials belong to the clubs in question” and called on them to “express their repugnance and work for a change in club policies.” The three clubs withdrew from the tennis league after Mrs. Carl T. Rowan, wife of a former U.S. Ambassador to Finland and director of the U.S. Information Agency, Joined the Indian Spring Club here.
