Recent cross burnings in south Dade County are the latest indication of an increase in Ku Klux Klan activity in Florida, according to a statement made today by the Florida office of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith. Jack Kassewitz, chairman of ADL’s Florida Board, said that over the past six months membership and fund-raising rallies of the United Klans of America (UKA) have been held in more than a dozen communities from Florida’s northern panhandle to south Dade County. Mr. Kassewitz said that many of the UKA rallies have featured Robert Shelton, the “Imperial Wizard,” who “has exhorted his audiences with the Klan’s traditional mixture of race hatred and gutter level anti-Semitic bigotry.”
