Admiral Griff said that the basic Russian goal is the expansion of its power and influence by the creation of subservient regimes which they have done along the southern flank of the Mediterranean. “If they succeed in entrenching themselves in this area of vital concern,” he said, “they will create a totally different situation for the Western allies.” He predicted, however, that NATO would cope successfully with this challenge as it had with all others since the end of World War II.
