The sum of $40,000 was donated here by Adolf H. Kates, noted Jewish leader and philanthropist, to various Jewish causes at a banquet arranged in honor of his 70th birthday by the Jewish Community Center. Part of the gift will go for local Jewish organizations and institutions in Cuba, while substantial contributions will go for institutions in Israel, as well as for the Joint Distribution Committee and the United Hias Service. Mr. Kates also announced a $500 prize which will be awarded annually for the best article on Jews in the Cuban press.
Mr. Kates, who settled in Cuba in 1915, came to this country from Belgium. He has been decorated by the governments of France, Belgium and Cuba. He has taken a leading interest in Jewish communal life in Cuba and was president of various Jewish and non-Jewish institutions in Havana. Last year he visited Israel. At the banquet, the Jewish Community Center presented him with a medal for his services to the community.
