Calling Israel “America’s reliable friend and ally in the Mideast,” U.S. labor leaders expressed opposition to the sale of advanced mobile missiles and F-16 fighter jets to Jordan.
The executive council of the AFL-CIO, meeting here to formulate the organization’s domestic and foreign policy for the coming year, declared in a statement issued last Thursday that the possible supply of such weapons to Jordan “is justifiably viewed by Israel as a serious threat to its security.”
Referring to statements attributed to Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger urging the sale of the weapons to Jordan, the statement said: “Giving formidable weapons to those who have adamantly refused to join the peace process can only undermine that process (Camp David) as it enters a crucial and delicate state.”
The statement also called on the Reagan Administration to reaffirm its support for Israel and to halt the flow of arms to Israel’s enemies who oppose the Camp David peace process.
