Some 50 African and Jewish scholars from nine countries and Israel, will meet next week at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in an “unprecedented conference” on “The Bible and Black Africa,” according to Rabbi Marc H. Tanenbaum, national director of the Inter-religious Affairs Department of the American Jewish Committee.

The conference is sponsored by the Movement of Christian Intellectuals of Africa, the Israel Interfaith Committee, the Hebrew University and the American Jewish Committee in cooperation with the Vatican Congregation for the Propagation of Faith, the Catholic Association for the Biblical Apostolate in Rome, the World Council of Churches, the Biblical Society for Africa and the African Society for Culture.

Calling the subject matter of the conference and “its ecumenical sponsorship” both “intriguing and pioneering,” Rabbi Tanenbaum said that papers will be presented by African scholars from Senegal, the Cameroons, Volta, Zaire, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa and Ghana, as well as by Jewish scholars.
