Successfully concluding negotiations between the Jews and Arabs, Moshe Shertok, member of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, officially took over today the Huleh plain which, under the terms of a new concession, will be drained and settled by Jewish pioneers. The negotiations were carried on with the knowledge and approval of the Palestine government.
The Huleh plain, a marshy region, lies near the Syrian border about ten miles north of Lake Tiberias. It consists of approximately 40,000 acres, most of which is under water continuously. About 15,000 acres is the property of the Palestine government, while the remainder belongs to Syrian Arabs. The area lies at sea level and is surrounded, except at the southern end, by the Hermon Mountains, which slope off into the Huleh plain. The floor of the valley is almost level.
At the southern end of the area is a Jewish colony, Yesod Hamala. Some 5,000 Arabs also, live in the area, which is extremely malarial. According to medical authorities the region will continue a malarial plague spot until it is completely drained. The climate is mild and warm and is suitable for European settlers.
Under terms of the concession land has been set aside for Arabs who may be displaced by Jewish colonization of the Huleh plain.
