An appeal for a Palestine Emergency Fund, for the settlement in Palestine of thousands of German Jews, has been proclaimed by the Jewish Agency for Palestine. In a preliminary appeal, issued last night, the Agency calls on all Jews “to whom the tragic fate of the German Jews and the Jewish National Home is near to heart” to be in readiness for the task.
The appeal points out that considerable sums will be required for these purposes, necessitating united effort by Zionists and non-Zionists alike.
“The present tragic situation demands far-seeing constructive plans and in the center of all constructive work must stand Palestine,” the Agency statement declared. “We intend to collaborate with other organizations and leading Jewish circles.”
Discussing the German situation in detail, the appeal points out that “the feelings of brotherly solidarity and recognition of their deepest fate are ties which must as quickly as possible, mature in concrete action. Already thousands of Jewish families are breadless and thousands more face the same fate in a few weeks.
“Thousands of refugees are congregating in various European centers where they are being assisted to the utmost by their Jewish brethren there, but a joint, planned effort is essential to care for them and also for the future. While in the Mediaeval ages, Eastern Europe, and in the Nineteenth Century, overseas absorbed the Jewish emigrants, now the world for the Jews is almost completely shut, only the expansion of Palestine is forming our greatest hope,” the appeal declares.
