A sharp protest against the desecration of the Sabbath by the mid west Jewish groups who have arranged bus transportation early Saturday afternoon for a mass demonstration in Chicago against French President Georges Pompidou Saturday evening, was lodged today by Agudath Israel of America, national Orthodox Jewish movement. In a wire to the Jewish Community Relations Council of Chicago, Rabbi Moshe Sherer, executive president of the organization, declared that “the public desecration of the Sabbath by Jews does more harm to the cause of Israel than the shameful anti-Israel policies of the French Government.” Rabbi Sherer called for the cancellation of these plans. A similar protest was lodged with the Community Relations Committee of Cleveland’s Jewish Federation by Gerson Adler, president of the Cleveland chapter of Agudath Israel. The demonstration in Chicago, as those that took place in Washington where an estimated 4,000 persons participated, San Francisco and the one planned for in New York when M. Pompidou arrives there on March 2, is to protest the sale of 110 Mirage jets to Libya while maintaining an embargo on 50 Mirages to Israel which has already been paid for.
