“With Rosh Hashonah services beginning Sunday night, Jewish organizations made the approaching Holy Days the occasion for appeals in behalf of Jews abroad, while leaders of public life greeted the Jews with expressions of hope for the future.
Leading the list of greetings was that of President Roosevelt, which said: “I am happy to join in the celebration of Rosh Hashonah, and it is my very sincere hope that the path which we now but dimly perceive soon will be found to be a read to world peace and to world justice.”
Governor Herbert H. Lehman praised the United States for convening the Evian conference. He said that “the conscience of the civilized world is being aroused by America,’ the country of our love and loyalty.” Dr. Cyrus Adler said that “no one who lives by the tenets and practices of judaism fully in his every day life has cause to feel anything but that he has contributed to the well being and high thinking of the world.”
The Joint Distribution Committee, United Palestine Appeal and American Committee Appeal for Jews in Poland were among the organizations whose leaders issued statements stressing the necessity for increased funds. the u.p.a will sponsor a special broadcast Sunday over the Columbia Broadcasting System and the J.D.C. over the Mutual Broadcasting System.
Refugees were afforded free facilities for worshipping on the High Holy Days through an arrangement made with synagogues by the New York Section of the national council of Jewish Women, which also is arranging services for newly-arrived immigrants and patients in city institutions on welfare island.
The National Committee for Religion and Welfare Recovery designated Monday as “Brotherhood Monday,” made a statement greeting the Jews and expressing condemnation of persecution, and issued a program of inter-faith services. an inter-faith Rosh Hashonah service will be held by the world fellowship of faiths at the Plymouth church of the pilgrims in Brooklyn.
Rosh Hashonah will be made the occasion for the Zionist organization of America and Junior Hadassah to launch a membership drive. The National Council for Jewish Education and the Jewish Education Association of New York will observe “Jewish Education Week” between Rosh Hashonah and Yom kippur.
