A report on the situation of the Jews in Mexico will be made by Rabbi Philip Bernstein of Rochester at the extraordinary session of the American Jewish Congress which will be held this week-end in Philadelphia, it was announced yesterday.
Rabbi Bernstein recently returned from a visit to Mexico, where he made a study of conditions among Jews at the behest of the American Jewish Congress.
“The Jews, who form one-tenth of one per cent of the population have had no difficulties with the government,” Rabbi Bernstein said. “Nevertheless, the Jews of the United States should continue to protest against discriminatory anti-religious polices in Mexico and appeal to President Cardenas and his government to grant all sects such freedom as is consistent with the policy of modern enlightened nations.”
There are few Jewish communities as well-circumstanced as the Mexican Jewish community, Rabbi Bernstein said, “and they have won an important and useful position in the economic life of a backward country.”
