Albert A. List, of New York, a leading Jewish industrialist and philanthropist, announced yesterday a gift of $3,500,000 to the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and one of $3,00,000 to the Mount Sinai Hospital and Medical School in New York. Mr. List has been active in fund-raising and gifts to both institutions.
In announcing the gifts, Mr. List said he hoped to make contributions of $5,000,000 annually hereafter to his favorite causes — medical research, social services, education and religious institutions.
A lifetime adherent of Conservative Judaism, Mr. List said the Seminary “plays one of the most important roles in the development of Jewish religious and cultural life in America.” He recently accepted the chairmanship of the Seminary’s finance committee, which is directing a drive to raise a $35,000,000 building fund to expand the Seminary’s physical facilities.
Mr. List was born in Fall River, Mass. in 1901. His parents emigrated from Rumania. He left school at 13 to join a family-operated grocery store. After the end of World War I, when his two older brothers returned from military service, the family built up the grocery store into a major distributor and launched a number of other enterprises.
