Formation of the first permanent district organization of Aleph Zadek Aleph here was approved today at the midwest convention of the fraternal order.
It will be known as District No. 6 and will seek to carry out the fraternal and charitable aims of the order. Similar district organizations will soon be formed in other parts of the country, it was predicted.
Hitlerism, Judaism and the Roosevelt program were subjects of discussion by the convention.
Joseph Padway, counsel for the Wisconsin State Federation of Labor, lauded the President’s restoration of citizenship to persons convicted during the war of pacifistic tendencies as an act of “enlightened liberalism.”
This action and recognition of Russia were hailed by Mr. Padway as signs that the United States is receding from the “dangerous, chauvinistic nationalism” that now engulfs European countries and is entering on an era of international good will.
Fred Bernstein, Chicago, member of the B’nai B’rith Hillel Foundation, assailed the persecution of Jews under Hitler and predicted the Jews would survive this onslaught as they have others throughout history. The “real problem” of the Jews, he said, is to educate Jewish youth to a knowledge of Jewish history, cultural contributions, and the race’s “raison d’etre” for existence.
