Funeral services were held here earlier this week for Prof. Alexander M. Dushkin, founder of the Hebrew University’s School of Education and Professor Emeritus who died last Thursday at the age of 85.
Prof. Dushkin was born in Poland and was educated in the United States where he received his Ph.D. from Columbia University. He was also a graduate of the Teachers Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. He joined the Hebrew University faculty in 1949. Prior to leaving for Israel he held the office of executive superintendent of the Jewish Education Committee in New York.
Prof. Dushkin, who was awarded the Israel Prize for education in 1968, exerted a profound influence on the modernization of Jewish education in both the U.S. and in Israel. He was director of the Board of Jewish Education in Chicago from 1922 to 1934 and a lecturer at the University of Chicago and College of Jewish Studies during the same period. He was the author of several books on Jewish education in the United States.
