Alfred Edward Perlman, 51, was elected yesterday president and chief executive officer of the New York Central Railroad, one of the largest railway companies in the United States, it was announced here today.
A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Harvard School of Business Administration, Mr. Perlman was until yesterday executive vice-president of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad with which he served for 18 years. His research activities attracted the attention of the Federation of Railway Progress several years ago.
Mr. Perlman is the son of a civil engineer. He was born in St. Paul and has been working on railways since he was 16. He was graduated from MIT at the age of 20. He was later engaged by various railroad companies to make studies of ailing railroads. In 1952 he was named executive vice-president of the Rio Grande with a salary and bonus totalling $52,500 a year. In the New York Central post he succeeds William White who received a salary of $120,000 a year.
