There are about 100,000 Jews in Algeria, according to figures published by the “Paix et Droit”, the organ of the Alliance Israelite Universelle.
The latest census in Algeria was taken in 1926. The census forms did not demand particulars of religion, therefore it is impossible to estimate the Jewish population other than by approximation. Of a total population of 6,064,865 inhabitants in Algeria, 872,439 are Europeans. There are about 100,000 Jews of whom 3 per cent are Europeans. The most important Jewish centres are Oran with 30,000; Algiers 20,000; Constantine, 15,000. There are also thirty-five districts in the interior or which have Jewish populations more or less numerous.
In Tunis, the Government has just published the figures of the census made in April 1926. Exact figures are given of the number of the native Jewish population, but there are no exact figures of the number of European Jews, chiefly French and Italian; these have been grouped together with their co-nationals. The total number of European Jews is estimated at about 10,000, four-fifths of whom live in Tunis.
