The French administration in Algiers was openly charged here tonight with direct responsibility for the pogroms in Constantine at a public protest meeting under the auspices of the French League to Combat Anti-Semitism. President Bernhard Lecache of the League, who presided, demanded to know whether it was true that:

1. The Constantine garrison was locked up in the barracks during the pogrom after a Zouave regiment had expressed the desire to intervene and protect the Jewish population.

2. The civil authorities of Constantine refused to ask for troops to halt the pogrom.

3. Anti-Semitic propaganda was not forbidden.

“Why were none of the officials responsible for the pogrom dismissed from their posts?” Leache asked.
