The attention of the Quai d’Orsay has been called to allegations made in Moslem papers to the effect that the Maronite patriarch of Lebanon is manoeuvering for Italy which is trying, the papers allege, to influence Christian opinion in Syria and Lebanon with a view to the transfer of the Syrian Mandate to her. The Quai d’Orsay is inclined to place no credence on this report. The Moslem papers wrote that when the Concordat between the Vatican and Mussolini was signed, the Papal agent in Syria ordered all the Catholic convents there to fly the Italian instead of the French flag, thus causing a Franco-Italian incident which remains unsettled. The Quai d’Orsay knows nothing of any such incident.
