“Much thought and work has been devoted to afforestation in various parts of Palestine. The Government, the Jewish National Fund, Christian missions, and private individuals have all taken part in the splendid work already accomplished within recent years,” says an appeal signed by Lord Allenby, Lord Melchett and Sir Francis Younghusband, appearing in the “Times” asking for contributions for the Men of the Trees Palestine Fund to encourage and assist afforestation work in Palestine.
“While freely acknowledging with appreciation and gratitude the work already accomplished and what is now in hand, no one viewing the miles of bare Judean slopes looking eastward from Mount Scopus, to mention but a single well known spot near Jerusalem, can fail to admit that there is room for vast additional effort, with resulting advantages to the land.
“Besides those dwelling in this land of historic interest and future prospect, many others the world over have learned to love it and wish it well. Here is a worthy object which, apart from its beautifying effects, will greatly benefit the country, and while it is not suggested that anything should be proposed which would jeopardize the collection of funds for similar objects in Great Britain, it is hoped that many of those who are specially interested in the future of Palestine will be willing and anxious to subscribe to this fund,” the appeal declares.
