Chilean President Dr. Salvador Allende today sent “most cordial best wishes” for the year 5732 to the Jewish community in a letter to the President of the Jewish Representatives Committee of Chile. The message said “I wish to reiterate that my government has a heartfelt sentiment of respect for communities that you represent which have made such valuable efforts for the social and cultural progress of Chile.” Dr. Allende expressed the hope that the Jewish community would get to know the democratic “vocation” which inspired the actions taken by the government to meet the overriding economic, social and political needs of the people and nation and would join in “our fight for a better future for everyone.” The President’s letter will be read in all Chilean synagogues on Yom Kippur.
