Formation of an American committee of Friends of the Alliance Israelite Universelle, French Jewish organization which for 70 years has conducted schools for secular and Jewish education and vocational training in the Middle East, was decided upon at a New York meeting of prominent American, French and Middle Eastern Jewish communal leaders, it was announced today by Jules Braunschvig, vice-president of the Alliance, who recently arrived in this country for the purpose of organizing support for the educational activities of the organization.
Among those present were Professor Rene Cassin, president of the Alliance, who was in this country in connection with his duties as vice-chairman of the U.N. Commission on Human Rights: Jacob Plaustein, chairman of the executive committee of the American Jewish Committee; M. Braunschvig; Dr. David DeSola Pool and other communal leaders.
The Alliance, M. Braunschvig stated, maintains 100 schools providing education for more than 40,000 pupils in Morocco, Tunis, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Iran. Plans are being formulated, he said, for the expansion of facilities to provide schools for 70,000 within the next five years, and he added that European Jews are too poor and too few, under present conditions, to bear the entire burden of maintenance and expansion of Jewish educational facilities in the Mediterranean area.
