Chief Rabbi Joseph Hertz of Great Britain last night appealed to the United Nations government to attempt to secure “war prisoner” status for the Jews of occupied Europe and to arrange for their exchange for Germans held by the Allies.
Addressing a memorial meeting here for the Jews of the Warsaw ghetto, the chief Rabbi said that “with nearly 1,000,000 Jews in Hungary on the brink of annihilation, it is not beyond the might of Britain and the Allies to ensure the remaining Jews of Europe war prisoner status with facilities for exchange and to offer sanctuary somewhere to those escaping from the Nazi inferno.”
A memorandum outlining plans for stabilizing the status of the Jews in Europe after the war was submitted by the Board of Deputies of British Jews to the conference of British Dominions Premiers held here recently, it was revealed today.
