Deputy Premier Yigal Allon returned to Israel today from his visits to the United States and Canada and told reporters at Lydda Airport that his talk with Secretary of State William P. Rogers was open-hearted and friendly. Allon denied reports that their conversation was “hard.” He said there was total agreement between Israel and the U.S. on basic points, although “there are also some important questions on which we do not see eye to eye and on which we differ.” Regarding a reopening of the Suez Canal under an interim arrangement, Allon said Israel and Egypt were still far apart on terms. He stressed that in no case would Arab or Soviet military personnel be permitted east of the waterway.
