Labor Minister Yosef Almogi said today that he was strongly considering resigning from the Cabinet to run for Mayor of Haifa. The mayoral nomination was offered him by unanimous vote of the Haifa Labor Party. In Haifa, Israel’s second largest city and major seaport, nomination on the Labor ticket is tantamount to election.
Almogi announced the possibility of leaving the Cabinet after conferring Sunday with Premier Golda Meir and Finance Minister Pinhas Sapir. He said they told him the decision was up to him. The Labor Minister said he would announce his final decision “within a week.” Political observers said it was almost certain that Almogi will opt to leave the government after the Oct. elections for municipal office. They said his candidacy would mean that Haifa would have a “strong mayor” for the first time since the death of Mayor Abba Koushy four years ago.
Premier Golda Meir today appointed her military aide. Col. Yisrael Lior, to serve as her special advisor on anti-terrorist activities. He replaces Gen. Aharon Yariv who resigned to run for the Knesset.
