Almost every Jewish community in Connecticut, aroused by the persecutions of members of their race in Palestine, has risen in protest and is calling mass meetings. Among the cities passing resolutions and creating funds to assist the victims in the Palestine area are Hartford, New Haven, Bridgeport, Waterbury, Colchester, Manchester, Norwich, New London.
In Hartford thousands packed into a small hall, where they were addressed by U. S. Congressman E. Hart Fenn, Rev, Sherrod Soule and former Senator Herman P. Koppleman. Despite the public announcement that no funds would be solicited, the sum of $2,600 was donated within a few minutes by the spontaneous insistence of the audience.
Pending the organization of a State Emergency Relief Committee, contributions are being received by Elik Nirenstein of Hartford, who has been named temporary treasurer.
State newspapers are bitter in their editorials against the marauders, and have supported the Zionists in urging England to assume a better stand towards the protection of the Jews in Palestine.
Brooklyn Jewry last night held a memorial meeting to honor Jewish martyrs of the Arab outrages in Palestine. A huge audience which filled to capacity the two auditoriums of the Brooklyn Jewish Center, attended. Supreme Court Justice Mitchell May presided.
The speakers included Congressman Hamilton J. Fish, Jr., David A. Brown, Congressman Emanuel Celler, and Rabbis Louis D. Gross, Israel H. Levinthal and Alexander Lyons.
Leading cantors of the borough chanted Jewish prayers for the victims. Resolutions of protest and condemnation were adopted.
The committee in charge of the meeting was headed by Albert D. Schanzer, and included Isaac Allen, Rabbi Burack, A. Seidman, Congressman Emanuel Celler, J. H. Cohen. Dr. Louis D. Gross, Max Hertzfeld, Rabbi B. Leon Hurwitz, and Samuel Kramer.
BOROUGH PARK TO RAISE $25,000
The Jewish community of Borough Park will in the course of the next week be asked to contribute the sum of $25,000 to the Palestine Emergency Relief Committee.
A Committee, comprising representatives of forty-eight Jewish congregations and associations in Borough Park has been formed for the purpose. Special meetings of all Jewish organizations in Borough Park will be held throughout the week and appeal for funds made in the synagogues on Saturday.
The campaign will wind up with a huge mass meeting Sunday night in the Temple Beth-El at Borough Park at which time reports of the progress of the fund will be rendered.
Officers of the committee are: State Senator Philip M. Kleinfeld, Chairman, Harris L. Selig. Executive Chairman, I. Lieberman, Treasurer, A. Soshier. Secretary, Rabbi I. M. Kovalsky, and S. Erberg.
A Women’s Committee has also been organized under the chairmanship of Mrs. S. Firestone and Mrs. A. Radin which will organize a house to house campaign for funds.
