Although the curtain is now descending upon the first act of a great tragedy in Germany, “the flickering light of civilization” in the end will be rekindled and held aloft by a Jew, declared Dr. William Rosenbloom, Rabbi of Temple Israel, New York, in an address before the Veritans Service Club.
Predicting his address upon the current play, “The Shattered Lamp,” Rabbi Rosenbloom, pointed out that down through the ages the Jew has always been a leading actor in the drama of life. “There is the danger,” he said, “that the Jew, regarding himself as a ‘darling of destiny,’ will sit back confidently in the belief that destiny will take care of him.”
Rabbi Rosenbloom advised that Jews be meek but strong in their fight for the preservation of justice and declared that the Jews can do this without resort to “colored shirts” or “nightgowns.”
