Ambassador Rafael Named Director-general of Israel’s Foreign Affairs Ministry

Ambassador Mordechai Kidron’s name was prominently mentioned today as a possible replacement for Gideon Rafael as permanent representative of Israel to the United Nations. Ambassador Rafael was appointed director-general of the Israeli Foreign Affairs Ministry today.

Ambassador Kidron, who served as Israel’s representative to the European office of the United Nations in Geneva, participated in the Security Council meeting on the June war. He served as a member of the Israeli delegation under Foreign Minister Abba Eban as Mr. Eban’s deputy for several years. Another name mentioned to succeed Mr. Rafael was Joseph Tekoah, deputy director-general of the Israeli Foreign Ministry and a former Ambassador to the Soviet Union.
