More than 1,000 of the outstanding cultural and Jewish communa, leaders in the country participated here tonight in a gala dinner-concert staged at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel by the America-Israel Cultural Foundation, where $250,000 was raised for the organization’s cultural activities in Israel. The event marked the Foundation’s celebration of its 25th anniversary.
The guests of honor and participants in the program consisted of a virtual who’s who in American cultural life, led by the violinist, Isaac Stern, who is president of the Foundation. Special citations were awarded to Hannah Rovina, 80 year old former star of the Habiman Theatre in Israel; Jacques Lipchitz, the noted sculptor; and Igor Stravinsky, the composer.
The event was highlighted by a performance of Stravinsky’s “The Soldier’s Tale,” produced by Jerome Robbins, with direction and choreography by Anna Sokolow, and the famous actor Jason Robards as narrator. The orchestra was conducted by Leonard Bernstein and, among the musicians in the performance, was Mr. Stern. Mr. Stern read before the black-tie assemblage attending the $250 per-plate event greetings from President Johnson, Israel’s President Zalman Shazar and Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol.
