The Jewish Restitution Successor Organization today announced that a number of paintings, drawings, and prints whose owners either died heirless or are untraceable have been turned over to it by the occupation authorities in the U.S. Zone of Germany.
These objects, largely of limited value, are deemed to have belonged to former Jewish owners who, together with their families, have perished at the hands of the Nazis, and the transfer has been effected in accordance with the J.R.S.O.’s status as the legal successor of heirless and unclaimed Jewish property in the U.S. zone.
The objects are now in the United States; a number of them will be sent to Israel in the near future, and the remainder will be stored for the time being at the Jewish Museum, in New York City.
