President Izhak Ben-Zvi today appointed Supreme Court Justice Simon Agranat Deputy Chief Justice of Israel’s highest tribunal. He will replace the late Justice Shneur Zalman Cheshin, who died last year.
Justice Agranat, 53, has been a member of the Supreme Court since 1950. Born in Louisville, Ky., he is a graduate of the University of Chicago. He settled in Palestine 30 years ago and was first appointed to the bench there in 1940.
