American-born Colonel Yosef Nevo was appointed today military commander of the Jerusalem District, succeeding Colonel Yitzhak Peri who was named to another post.
Colonel Nevo, 42, who was born in Chatanooga, Tenn., came to Israel during his childhood. He was a member of the Haganah, the Jewish pre-state voluntary army and took part in the night squads which were organized by the late Colonel Orde Wingate and which fought the Arabs during the 1936 disturbances.
He joined the British Army during World War II as an artillery man and later was one of the founders of the Israel artillery corps which fought in the War of Liberation. He was named charge d’Affaires of the Israel Legation in Canada in 1952 and rejoined the army in 1954. He is married and the father of two children.
